On November 10th 2023, The Marvels soared into theaters across the globe. Perception collaborated with Marvel Studios to design and animate a vibrant Main on End title sequence for The Marvels, amplifying the excitement and energy of the film.
Perception is a visual effects and design lab based in Secaucus, New Jersey. Since 2009, Perception has created over 20 title sequences for various Marvel Studios’ films and series, including Avengers: Endgame, Loki Season 1 and Loki Season 2, and Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. For The Marvels Main on End title sequence, Perception took a bold illustrative approach.
“This sequence felt unique because we don’t often get to flex our illustrative style,” said Eric Daly, Perception’s Director of Production. “We spent the first few weeks designing these really beautiful and dynamic compositions. There are some really heroic images in this sequence to celebrate each of the heroines individually and collectively.”
The Marvels Main on End title sequence includes energetic, clever transitions and dramatic, striking colors that capture the spirit of the movie and create parallels to the fun, space road trip that Captain Marvel, Monica Rambeau and Ms. Marvel embark on.
“To explore and design a retro space rock opera in a Marvel Studios title sequence is a very exciting concept,” stated Greg Herman, Creative Director at Perception. “When we saw the movie and understood the tone, it became clear that this path offered a wealth of inspiration for us all. I felt grateful to be able to live in this colorful hand-drawn world and am thrilled with the animation style we created.”
The overall aesthetic of The Marvels title sequence blends vintage with vibrancy. To find inspiration for this sequence, Perception turned to classic ’70s science fiction films and entertainment.
“We referenced a lot of the science fiction illustrations from artists like Mike Hinge, Kilian Eng and Mœbius to Heavy Metal magazine covers from the 1970s and 1980s,” said Christian Haberkern, Perception’s Art Director. “These references played a key role in developing our design language, choice of colors and composition.”
Perception’s prior involvements with the characters from The Marvels include designing a fully customized Stan Lee Marvel Studios fanfare for Captain Marvel, the Emmy-nominated Main on End title sequence for WandaVision, and the Jersey City-inspired Main on End title sequence for Ms. Marvel. The team also created an updated Marvel Studios fanfare, heroic transitions and animated hologram technology for The Marvels.
“This was a particularly fun sequence to create inspired by the dazzling 70s sci-fi illustrator Mike Hinge,” stated Jeremy Lasky, Co-Founder of Perception. “It takes the audience on a non-stop roller coaster ride through the infinite cosmos, revealing stunning imagery composed in unexpected ways, rendered in all its iridescent, multicolored grandeur. We were honored to collaborate with director Nia DaCosta, the entire talented team on The Marvels, and everyone at Marvel Studios.”
The Marvels marks the 45th Marvel project that Perception has worked on. Perception is honored to continue their collaboration with Marvel Studios, and the team is eager for audiences to soar to new heights with the powerful heroines of The Marvels.
“Perception has been involved in the Marvel Cinematic Universe for over 15 years,” concluded Danny Gonzalez, Co-Founder of Perception. “It is truly remarkable for The Marvels to be a milestone film in our professional history with Marvel Studios.”
