INTRODUCTION

Marvel Television’s highly anticipated Agatha All Along officially premiered on Disney (2024). Following our collaboration with Marvel Studios on WandaVision (2021), our studio was approached by the same creative team to design Agatha All Along’s exquisitely detailed Main on End title sequence.

The show follows Agatha Harkness, who, after escaping from Westview with the help of a mysterious teen, teams up with him to tackle the Witches' Road—a legendary path of magical trials. Together, they form a new coven and embark on the perilous journey to reclaim her lost powers and uncover the teen’s true motives.

MAIN ON END TITLE SEQUENCE

Our goal was to create a design that truly showcases the rich legacy and deep cultural imprint of witches throughout history, which lies at the heart of Agatha All Along. Since the series explores what happens when a coven-less, mixed bag of witches — defined by deceit, self-interest, and wickedness– are forced to work together, we wanted our design to illustrate witch lore and the assumptions made about witches.

“Collaborating with Marvel Studios on Agatha All Along was very different from WandaVision,” says Danny Gonzalez, Co-Founder of Perception. WandaVision is a love letter to classic TV, whereas Agatha All Along centers on the stereotypes of witches– and it was incredibly interesting to dive into that realm.”

We decided to leverage a combination of real historical archives and modern pop culture elements to retell the stories of witches over time. Extracting from a diverse range of mixed media resources– such as newspaper articles, old TV episodes, the Library of Congress, and more– our team was able to visually display the treatment and persecution of witches.

AGNES OF WESTVIEW PARODY TITLE SEQUENCE

In addition to the Main on End title sequence, our team designed the “Agnes of Westview” parody title sequence, inspired by psychological crime dramas. In this design, we sought to weave storytelling seamlessly with powerful, haunting visuals.

As Agatha and her coven travel the Witches’ Road, each of its trials alters the attire of the coven to emulate a particular kind of witch from pop culture. The first episode sees Agatha in a true crime drama as a detective, in an homage to the HBO miniseries Mare of Easttown (2021). Our team staged a “yellow brick road” out of police tape to reveal Agatha’s real world beginning to bleed into the fake TV world that was created for her.

BEHIND-THE-SCENES

Richly layered with hidden gems and carefully placed easter eggs, Agatha All Along’s Main on End title sequence holds a depth of detail that offers new discoveries for the audience with each watch. Our team's design weaves together archival illustrations from the Salem Witch Trials, historical newspaper clippings, and pop culture elements, transporting viewers through a visual narrative that spans the ages.

“We had creative freedom to fully explore the show’s core themes, leveraging original assets that infused authenticity into our narrative, says Christian Haberkern, Art Director at Perception. "As we dove into history and uncovered new insights along the way, the design process became an incredibly memorable experience for our team.”
